Qualifications as an expert witness in lung diseases

During Dr Allen's advanced training in Thoracic Medicine in Melbourne, he attended half-day sessions for six months at the Department of Industrial Hygiene, with Dr Jim Milne, Industrial Hygienist. During that time he saw a large number of patients with Industrial lung disease, particularly asbestos-related and silicosis, and a range of other occupational lung diseases. He also visited a wide range of industrial sites with an Industrial Hygiene Officer and has a large collection of photographic slides from this period.

Dr Allen then completed five years of research at the Austin and Repatriation General Hospitals, Melbourne, into the disease sarcoidosis, and was awarded a Ph. D. for his thesis on this condition, (University of Melbourne 1990). This work involved both clinical and laboratory research and gave him a broad insight into interstitial lung diseases and their immunology.

He was then a appointed as a Senior Staff Thoracic Physician and Clinical Associate Professor, The Prince Charles Hospital (1987-1995) where he set up an Interstitial Lung Disease Clinic, (the first in Queensland) and Sarcoidosis Clinic with a large computerised database. At this Clinic he saw a number of patients with interstitial lung disease also including occupational lung diseases, and taught Thoracic Registrars.

Since then, Dr Allen has been involved as an expert witness in numerous medico-legal cases of a wide range of occupational lung diseases and particularly, asbestos-related diseases. He sees many patients with this condition on a weekly basis and has appeared in the Federal Court (Queensland) on numerous occasions as an Expert Witness over recent years.

In addition, he also manages many patients with occupational lung disease, particularly mesothelioma, asbestosis, asbestos pleural disease and silicosis, both as inpatients and outpatients.

Qualifications as an expert witness in sleep disorders

During Dr Allen's advanced training in Thoracic Medicine in Melbourne at the Repatriation General Hospital, Heidelberg, he reviewed patients with sleep disorders and conducted sleep studies at night. When he became a Visiting Consultant for the Repatriation General Hospital and Austin Hospital in Melbourne (1985-1987) he also managed patients with sleep disorders.

In 1987-1995 he was Senior Staff Thoracic Physician at the Prince Charles Hospital Chermside, Brisbane, where he also managed patients (outpatients and inpatients) with sleep disorders and was involved in the reporting of sleep studies and in the day-to-day running of the sleep laboratory. In addition Dr Allen managed patients with a range of respiratory disorders including ventilatory failure in intensive care in his capacity as a Consultant Thoracic Physician attached to the Intensive Care Unit.

In 1992 he attended a training course at Stanford University, California on a wide range of sleep disorders.

From 1995 to late September 2005, Dr Allen practice was located at St Andrew's Place, Spring Hill. Since October 2005 Dr Allen relocated his office to The Wesley Medical Centre. He continues to see a wide-range of patients with sleep disorders including sleep apnoea, periodic leg movement disorder, insomnia, narcolepsy, idiopathic CNS hypersomnia and has done medico-legal reports on patients with a range of these disorders.

Dr Allen is a member of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ) and has been credentialed by the Health Insurance Commission to receive Medicare reimbursement for sleep studies for which he writes reports. He is also a member of the Australian Sleep Association and attends regular conferences by this association and associated bodies.
